CALL FOR PROPOSALS
IVETA ANNUAL CONFERENCE - ATLANTA, GEORGIA USA, NOVEMBER 28, 2012
The
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) invites the
submission of proposals for presentation on the theme of “Using Labor Market
Information to Improve TVET: Matching Supply and Demand” for its annual
conference on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 in – Atlanta, Georgia USA. TVET is
used to include VET and CTE. The annual conference is being held in conjunction
with the annual IVETA membership meeting and the ACTE Convention, which is being
held from November 29 to December 1, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia (http://www.acteonline.org/vision.aspx).
One measure
of success for technical vocational training programs is the placement of
graduates into well-paying jobs that offer opportunity for continued employment
and growth. Labor market information (LMI) is one of the essential ingredients
ensuring that TVET programs are targeting viable occupations. Labor market
information summarizes employment supply and demand, wage data, education and
training requirements, and other career-related information. Data such as these
are valuable for analyzing the economy of a geographical area, determining
future workforce needs, designing effective programs of study and providing
career guidance to students and job seekers. LMI is often the starting point
for more detailed occupational analysis and standards development, which in turn
are the basis for developing curricula and corresponding assessments.
The
Conference will focus on key aspects of labor market information for TVET,
including, but not limited to:
(a) types and sources of LMI data
(e.g., sector surveys, long-term projections, advisory committees),
(b) approaches to collecting LMI data,
(c) approaches to presenting LMI data,
(d) using LMI data to design TVET
programs,
(e) using LMI data to provide guidance
and counseling, and
(f) limitations to using LMI data and
solutions to those limitations.
Submission of
papers is being sought in these general or related areas.

Call For
Participation - International Conference On Preparing TVET
Educators
For The Next Generation (Next Gen Educon 2011)
December 12 – 13, 2011, Grand Millennium Hotel, Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia
Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC) announce that
the International Conference on Preparing TVET Educators for the Next
Generation (NEXT GEN EDUCON 2011) being organized by the Colombo Plan Staff
College, UNESCO UNEVOC International Centre for TVET, GIZ - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale
Zusammenarbeit (Human Capacity Development in TVET) - Germany, Ministry
of Higher Education - Malaysia and other partners is going to be held on
December 12 - 13, 2011 at the Grand Millennium Hotel, Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia.
With the
advent of rapid globalization, emergence of information and communication
technology, increasing shift towards knowledge-driven economy, and international
and regional competitions, significant challenges are faced by the education
systems. Advanced teacher education is thus very important to prepare educators,
especially in the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector,
in facing the changing technological contexts. With this premise, the
international conference aims to appreciate the significance of global
challenges in TVET Educators’ Development; examine the emerging issues and
challenges in TVET in training and developing educators; share innovative
concepts and models in TVET Educators’ training and development; and promote
best practices and approaches in TVET Educators’ Development through
cross-sharing of experiences.

by the IVETA President, Mr. Abel Modungwa
Let
me greet you all and hope all are succeeding in the drive to grow the TEVET
sector in your respective portfolios and countries.
As
you will notice, the last hotline came out in the first quarter of the calendar

quarterly basis due to the low level of information inflow for the editions. The

September and December for this 2011 Calendar year. But where necessary, a
special edition of the Hotline will be released before quarter end.
Please

2012 Annual Conference – 22nd-24th August 2012. Mangochi
District, Lake Malawi Shore, Malawi
Malawi
has indicated its readiness to host the 2012 IVETA International Conference in a
meeting held in Lilongwe Malawi by the IVETA President and IVETA Africa Vice

conference.
The
agreed theme for the Conference is ‘Sustainable Development through TEVET’.
The dates for the conference are 22nd-24th August 2012.

at the end of the year. You will get your renewals and new memberships
processed, but maybe not as fast as expected.

IVETA Reception on December 1, 2010 in Las Vegas
More than 20 IVETA members and guests attended an evening reception
in Las Vegas. Again this proved to be an important event for networking. Several
former presidents were present and shared their experience. For next year in St.
Louis, when we plan to have a conference (see above and remember November 16,
2011), we expect higher turnout.
Professional Micro Grant Programme
redefined
The executive committee at its Manila meeting took the decision to
expand the reach of the Professional Micro Grant Program. In future it will
include funding facilities for internships of IVETA members from eligible
countries at institutions offering these internships. As one of IVETA’s main
objectives is networking, experience sharing and knowledge transfer, an
internship can be a valuable contribution. The January 2011 hotline will provide
more information on the modalities of the funding mechanism. If you are
interested to offer internship opportunities to IVETA members, please contact
David Fretwell at

Hotline November 2010
Dear IVETA members,
Just two weeks after our international conference in Manila, I am
very happy to report that we had a wonderful conference experience. The
conference theme “Education for sustainable development in TVET” indeed provided
the opportunity to focus on important developments. Please see a brief
conference report below.
As we will not hold a one day conference in Las Vegas, I would like
to invite all members and friends of IVETA to attend an evening reception to be
held at the Hilton
Grand Vacations Suites, located adjacent to the Las
Vegas Hilton. Date and time: December 1, 2010 6:00 –
8:00pm.
The Executive Committee has taken some important decisions in Manila,
especially concerning the slate of candidates for the 2010 elections and
upcoming international conferences. Please read below.
I am looking forward to seeing you in Las
Vegas.

The conference finally adopted the “Manila Declaration” on the importance of ESD
in TVET. Please refer to the conference
website for further information, the conference report and some photographic
memories.
Upcoming International Conferences 2011 -

The Executive Committee debated the proposal to return to yearly
International Conferences during the upcoming years. While for 2011 the decision
is still to be taken, we expect for the following years to hold international
conferences in Botswana, Australia, Finland, Turkey, India and China. We expect
to contribute with these conferences to the development of TVET through improved
networking and exchange of best practices. Please follow the upcoming hotlines
and the IVETA
website for more information
.
Upcoming regional Conferences 2011 - 2012
For 2011, there are plans to hold the Africa Regional Conference in
Botswana. There might be a regional IVETA conference in Europe. We are still
discussing this opportunity with our European affiliate
partners.

IVETA
Newsletter: The theme of the first revised Newsletter, which
will be on the IVETA members’ web site by the end of September,
addresses the changing role of secondary vocational education. With
the advent of the knowledge economy, secondary education is increasingly
becoming compulsory in most developed and many middle income countries,
part of basic education, and is the key transition point to the world
of work and/or future specialized education. In developing countries,
primary education completion rates are increasing, which puts pressure
on Governments to provide more spaces in secondary education. The
above trends raise questions about the appropriateness of old-style
specialized and tracked secondary vocational education, which is expensive,
often provides youth with weak basic education skills, and results
in their having difficulty in adapting to the demands of the changing
knowledge economy. Secondary general and vocational education are
increasingly merging, and vocational training is increasingly left
to upper secondary, with a function of providing core work skills
from a general family of occupations to facilitate initial entry to
the workforce and to post secondary specialized training institutions.
These trends are discussed in several of the Newsletter articles,
and the September Issue of the ACTE Journal “Techniques”
has a number of articles on Career Clusters and Pathways in secondary
education.
Association
of Career and Technical Education (ACTE) Convention: We encourage
IVETA members to attend the ACTE Conference. To get the best rates,
