    AWARDS IVETA 2017

    The Robert D. Cain Business Organization Awards are awarded to companies, government agencies, or educational institutions in recognition of support of IVETA, such as sponsorship of general association programs, conference activities, work release for association participation, publicity and publication assistance. Robert D Cain was a long-term business member who made significant contributions to IVETA.

    THE ROBERT D CAIN BUSINESS ORGANIZATION AWARD

    Nominated by:  Carmel Thompson, Past President IVETA

    Independent Tertiary Education New Zealand (ITENZ).

    ITENZ is a national organisation representing private tertiary institutions in New Zealand.  They are the largest association covering all areas of tertiary education and are recognized by the NZ Government and their agencies as the main representative of the sector.

    ITENZ is dedicated to uniting the private tertiary education sector and representing the collective membership in a competitive and challenging political environment.

    ITENZ have hosted and supported thIs World TVET Conference 2017 in partnership with IVETA        12-15 September 2017 in Queenstown, New Zealand. 

    They welcomed delegates as part of a process of enhancing and strengthening TVET, assisting network activities that foster and facilitate the sharing of resources, experience, expertise and information in the world of VET.

    IVETA indeed acknowledges and appreciates their hard work and distinguished service in bringing this successful conference to fruition.  They have genuinely earned this award and have our sincere thanks.

     

    JOEL MAGISOS EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AWARD - 2 Winners:

    The Joel Magisos Exceptional Service Award is awarded to recognize long-term individual achievement in support of IVETA.  Particular attention is placed on activities relating to the continuing development and growth of the organization. A nominee must be a current member of IVETA who has been involved in Association activities over several years.  The award honors the contributions to IVETA of Joel Magisos, a sustaining Charter Member.   


    • 1.        Mr Javier Amaro, INSOURCE EDUCATION

    Nominated by:   Mr Baharudin Abdullah, President Elect IVETA.

    Javier Amaro is the CEO of Insource Education and is the IVETA Vice President for East Asia and the Pacific Region.  He has been a member of IVETA for 4 years and in that time has actively marketed IVETA in an effort to increase membership through his organisation with their substantial database of over 2,000 VET providers.  He attends IVETA International Conferences, presenting papers on current issues and Javier is also Chair of the IVETA Marketing and Membership Sub Committee.

    He recently held a successful  IVETA Regional Conference in June 2017 in Sydney, Australia, which attracted 450 participants. 

    Javier has a passion for VET on both a professional and personal level and is a worthy recipient of this award in 2017

     

    • 2.      Dr Brenden Tempest-Mogg, Warnborough College

    Nominated by:  Mr Baharudin Abdullah, President Elect IVETA

    Dr Brenden Tempest-Mogg is the President of Warnborough College and Warnborough University.  He is also currently the IVETA Vice President for Europe and has been for the past two years.

    Brenden is an enthusiastic member of the Executive Committee and has held a Regional Conference in Canterbury, UK for European VET providers in 2017 which was very well attended.  He has great ideas on innovative marketing/use of social media  and has been appointed to the Marketing and Membership Sub Committee.  

    He attends many conferences/graduation ceremonies internationally and always manages to promote IVETA at such function.

    Brenden is a very loyal and active member of IVETA who willingly shares his knowledge and expertise with others.  He is therefore a very worthy recipient of this award in 2017.

     

    The Valued Supporter of IVETA Award is awarded to an individual for exceptional support during the last year.  Activities may include membership recruitment, fund raising, organization of conference programs, and work on Association publications.  A nominee must be a current member of IVETA who has preferably been involved in Association activities for several years. 

    THE VALUED SUPPORTER OF IVETA AWARD:

    Dr. Ilhan GUNBAYI, Akdeniz University, Turkey.

    Nominated by:  Mr Hakan Kahramaner, IVETA Vice President, East Europe & Central Asia

    Dr Ilham Gunbayl is a Professor at Akdeniz University, Faculty of Education, Antalya, TURKEY.  He was a Past Vice President for East Europe and Central Asia from 2010-2015 and a member of IVETA since 2007.

    He has been put forward for this Award because of his past service and also for recent development of publications and projects in the field of VET.

    Ilhan is a popular member of the IVETA TEAM because of his enthusiasm and innovative views on TVET.  He is a regular presenter at our International Conferences.

    He is a popular choice for this award and we are sure he will continue to be an important contributor to IVETA in the future.

    The International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) is inviting authors to submit their manuscripts for publication in the IVETA journal.

    Manuscripts will be accepted on an ongoing basis, but must be submitted no later than August 1, to be considered for inclusion in the Fall, 2017 issue.

    I'd like to begin by thanking the membership for your vote and for the honor you have bestowed on me by electing me President of IVETA for 2017-2018.   I hope to return the favor by continuing the positive atmosphere and productive work environment we've experienced under the leadership provided by Carmel Thompson, our immediate past President.
     

    As we begin the new year, it's important to keep our strategic goals in focus:
    •    Consistently increase membership benefits and membership for the organization.
    •    Increase the involvement and relevance of the IVETA Executive.
    •    Improve financial sustainability and accountability.
    •    Review, revise, and redesign the organization's professional learning program.

    We will continue to keep these goals, the strategic initiatives, and the progress indicators as a guide to our work in the coming years.
     
    This has been a very active year for the IVETA Executive Committee with an enormous amount of work being accomplished, much of it behind the scenes.  Our new quarterly Executive Committee Skype meetings have afforded us the opportunity to work more effectively, refining processes and procedures for the benefit of the organization.  I'd like to mention special thanks to those on the Executive Committee who have worked especially hard to structure our new documents, including our Executive Secretariat Christine Gardner, General Secretary Margo Couldrey, Executive Director Mari Kontturi, and of course our Past President Carmel Thompson.  I have the distinct advantage of starting this two-year term with a streamlined constitution and bylaws, a more effective system for reviewing and establishing regional offices and other partnerships, a refined application for the TVET Innovation and Improvement Fund (TIIF, previously the Microgrant) and a renewed focus on a more effective business model to keep the organization solvent and growing.
     
    While we are well on our way in addressing our strategic goals, there are numerous tasks that remain to be accomplished to keep the forward momentum.  In her 2016 in review, Carmel Thompson recently summarized some of the challenges moving forward.  I'd like to highlight a few areas to focus our efforts for the forthcoming two-year period:
     
    •    Identifying membership needs and increasing member benefits
    •    Increasing the size and diversity of our membership
    •    Keeping the website current and active
    •    Opening more regional offices, appointing Liaison Officers, and providing more active support
    •    Encouraging more active involvement among the Officers as well as the membership in general
    •    Further revision and refinement of the conference business model and associated documents
    •    Planning for 2018 and 2019 conferences
     
    In the last few years we've accomplished our work through the effective use of subcommittees and task forces consisting of small numbers of Executive Committee members.  Building on that model, I'd like to see greater use of tasks forces, with active involvement by not only all Executive Committee members, but also from the membership at large.  Over time, we will be announcing the formation of task forces and issuing calls for volunteers.  Joining one or more of these committees or task forces will be a great way to increase your connection to and service to the organization, expand your IVETA network, and to begin your ascendency into the next level of IVETA leadership.  Your contribution to this effort promises to be greatly appreciated by the membership, and personally rewarding for yourself.
     
    I recently attended the Association for Career Technical Education (ACTE) conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.  This year we embedded the IVETA conference as at IVETA track within the overall larger conference.  We had five dedicated international sessions within the conference. This is the approach that was taken by IVETA in the early days of the organization.  The advantage to this approach is that it affords the opportunity for the IVETA membership to attend among the multitude of additional sessions offered at the ACTE conference.  The ACTE conference, by the way, had over 4,500 attendees, hundreds of sessions, and an enormous number of vendors to visit.  By way of disadvantage, our international attendance in the IVETA sessions was fairly low, and it did not give us the opportunity to meet as an organization.  The presentations we did have, however, were very good.  Thanks to all of those who attended and especially to those who presented.  Our presentation topics and presenters included the following:

    TVET and the Impact of IT

    o    Winston Fletcher
     
     
    This year's IVETA International Conference is scheduled for 13 - 14 September, 2017, in Queenstown New Zealand.  The venue is the Rydges Lakeland Resort Queenstown located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, with some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Queenstown is widely known as the Adventure Capital in New Zealand.  The conference website is http://www.worldtvet2017.kiwi/.  Please bookmark this website.  You'll surely want to make it to this conference.  The call for presentation proposals is open until 28 February 2017.  We strongly encourage our IVETA membership to submit proposals.  For submission information, visit http://www.worldtvet2017.kiwi/presentation-submission.
     
    For conferences beyond September in Queenstown New Zealand, some preliminary discussions have begun, but we are still open for proposals for the 2018 International Conference.    As well, the Executive Committee will be discussing other options for the annual conference held in the United States of America.  Stay tuned.  For further information, contact your Regional Vice President or myself.  Speaking of regions, as always IVETA is strongly supportive of regional IVETA conferences.  Many have been held in previous years, but it seems fewer in recent years.  However in 2016 there was a successful gathering among the European membership.
     
    Finally, this has been a transition year for the IVETA Journal.  We apologize for the tardiness on getting this journal out to you.  The editorship for the journal has transitioned from Dr. Davison Mupinga at Kent State University in Ohio to Dr. Robert Clark and Dr. Liz Richard from the Centre for Professional Development for Career and Technical Education at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, USA.  I'd like to thank Dr. Mupinga for his many years of service editing the journal, and thank Drs. Clark and Richard for taking-on the responsibility.  The journal website is http://www.iveta.org/journal.  We expect to release the next issue of the International Journal of Vocational Education and Training in late January or early February, 2017.

    By the time you receive this Hotline it will be the New Year and I will be in my new position of Immediate Past President on the IVETA Executive Committee.  The two year Presidency term has flown by so quickly but when I reflect on what has been achieved I am so grateful to you all for allowing me to represent you at international forums.  I have learnt so much and met so many wonderful new friends.  Our industry is indeed an industry of champions and although sometimes we have to go through tough times what the IVETA family has shown me is that if we work together we can achieve much.

    I particularly want to thank my Executive Committee who have generously given their time and expertise to grow our organisation in profile and reputation. 

    I would also like to welcome  Bob Mahlman to the position of President of IVETA for 2017/2018 and trust you will all support him as you have me over the next 2 years.  Bob will bring his own unique style of leadership to our organisation as other Past Presidents have and he has my full support.

    2016 has been another eventful year for IVETA.  We continue to grow in membership and profile and our international conferences are attracting interest and participation from organisations and delegates from new areas/countries who are now realising that TVET is important in order to train and/or upskill their local workforce so that they can be globally competitive.

    The success of our International Conference in Kuching in 2015, although not producing a large number of new memberships, none the less did raise our profile in the region through the high status and profiles of the presenters and the networking opportunities.  This year’s conference in Fiji will enhance our position with a large number of international presenters and participants in attendance, followed by the 2017  New Zealand Conference in Queenstown  which has already been heavily promoted  through our Hosts who are the New Zealand Association of Private Providers -ITENZ.

    IVETA is achieving a much higher recognition status with organisations such as UNESCO who recognise our membership comes from over 52 countries and as such we are a credible organisation.  I was invited to attended a UNESCO Forum in Shenzen, China in May as the President of IVETA and shown a great deal of respect.  China is interested in joining our organisation and they have put in an application to set up a Regional Office in Jinhua Polytechnic, Zhejiang Province   and also there is the possibility of hosting an international conference in 2018.

    Our Achievements during the year:

    • 1.     We have implemented a much better communication process with the Executive Committee who meet quarterly via skype and in person when the opportunity presents. We also have greater participation and engagement from our EC by setting up smaller sub committees who work on projects and come back to the full Executive Board for endorsement.
    • 2.     Our Vice Presidents are also providing regular reports from their region so we can gauge the needs of our members and rise our profile.
    • 3.     Opening up Regional Offices in Nigeria, UK and applications currently in from Sydney, Australia and China.
    • 4.     The appointment of our new Executive Director (with a legal background) working in co-operation with our General Secretary and President Elect to review and update the By Laws and Constitution have been finalised after a lot of hard work from that sub committee.  The updated documents have been signed off by the Executive Committee to cover us for future growth.
    • 5.     As we move to a business model to raise funds to provide greater member services in the future we recognised that our main business initiative and opportunity at the moment are the international conferences.  If we want to receive revenue by co-hosting these events then we need further revamp of our Conference Agreement which was undertaken and completed by the sub-committee of Executive Director, General Secretary and President Elect.

     

    Challenges Moving Forward:                                   

    • 1.     Identifying membership needs and services
    • 2.     Keeping our website current and active
    • 3.     Opening up more Regional Offices and providing active support (to be identified).
    • 4.     Appointing Liaison Officers in more countries to support Vice Presidents and Regional Offices and activities
    • 5.     Continuing to liaise with China for 2018 International Conference
    • 6.     Revisit Micro Grants and see how we can encourage applications or change criteria
    • 7.     Further revision of Conference Model Business document
    • 8.     Other business opportunities
    • 9.     How can we keep our outgoing Executive Committee members after they have completed their term of office?

    Although we have achieved much this year we can see there is still a lot of work to be done to keep the momentum going.  We have an active team who respect each other and work hard to support the profile and interests of IVETA.
